If you use IBS just for Bar coding, or MICR and OCR fonts, then you don't need to continue reading this WEB page.

The current sad situation:

Due the fact, that Ricoh never officially supported the output management capabilities of IBS, their developers and quality department never really took care about being able to download or install configuration files (convert.ini) or additional macros for overlays and reprints etc.

The good news is, that it is possible to set configurations, the question is only where are the configurations file(s) and forms placed?

Technical background

Most Ricoh devices with no hard disk have minimum 2 SD card slots. Usually one of them can be accessed using industry standard PJL commands, the other one not. IBS is intended to be installed on the other one. The benefit is, that the standard PJL command FSINIT will not wipe out such important firmware extensions. Finally the installed extended feature is more secure.

A Ricoh developed firmware interface between IBS and the device defines where IBS checks for the configuration files  Those printer internal paths are exported to the IBS and are unfortunately NOT consistent.

First time with IBS 1.18 we tried to solve that issue, but by accident the wrong version was tested by the Ricoh internal quality department and the situation did not change.

So fact is, that there are two locations the convert.ini has to be.

MP 4310 and SP 5200DN

With the release of IBS 1.19 the configuration files need to be placed on the IBS SD Card in Slot 2 in the directory \GPS, e.g. \GPS\convert.ini.
In the moment there is no other choice then to plug the SD card with IBS installations into a PC and copy the file(s) manually.

In the next 10 days we will test a solution with a second SD card in the upper slot. As a benefit we do hope to finally use IBS CC to download automatically the config files. Return here for watching the results.

Older Devices up to IBS version 1.17

Please copy the configuration files into the root directory of the card, where IBS was installed on. Then return the card to the device and turn it on. If the configuration is NOT recognized, please insert into the other free slot a second SD card with the configuration files, also placed in the root directory.

Ricoh has currently no plans to test or correct this issue.

How to easy test where to put the config files.

You find in the IBS CC installation a Quickset called: Quickset Testprint:

  1. Install IBS on the SD card and test if the bar code engine works.
  2. Then, as explained above, power the device off and remove the card or take a new one and copy the convert_test.ini file to the named place. Please note that you have to rename the file to lower case convert.ini
  3. Return the SD card into the device and power it on.
  4. Return to IBS CC - Quicksets - mark the device in the table - select convert_test in the drop down menu and press the Test button.
  5. If IBS did recognize the configuration file, 2 pages had been printed.
